Metropolis Moments Hi! This is the column written by Sarah for FOLC Central! Read on....
The Problem With Snow Northern Virginia (aka "I woke up this morning and wanted to hit someone") Every columnist gets her whiney moments- this is one of mine :) Snow- every school-kid's best friend- if you live in Virginia, that is... Here in VA, the minute there is any chance of winter precipitation, there is a rush on bottled water and antifreeze. Snow becomes the main story on the news, and everyone grades K-12 wears their pajamas inside out with hopes that they may have an unplanned holiday. People reschedule travel plans, people are glued to their television in search of weather forecasts, and everyone stares out the window, waiting for the first flakes. Every year is the same- "A huge storm system converging over our area" - "This could be the Blizzard of '96 all over again." (Anyone who lives in the area remembers the Blizzard of '96. We got a whopping 32 inches of snow, a week and 1/2 off of school, and now it goes down in infamy... Everyone from anywhere North of here laughs at us when we talk about it, but it is our one bright snow spot. So anytime someone says "remember 96?", we smile and think about the only really snowy winter we can remember.) They even got snow in Metropolis (SG's)! So they tell us, "prepare for the worst" and "make sure to stay tuned for snow safety tips!" Hah! Us school-goers know better. Every year we'll make the mistake of hoping for (at least) a delay when they say "blizzard," but to no avail. Today was no different- teachers, students, everyone was hoping, and we got *rain*. Needless to say, every schoolkid was very mad at the weatherman this morning. As a fellow classmate so superbly put it, "They shouldn't be called weathermen anymore- they should be called *dream-crushers*."
A Day in the
Life of a 16 Year old FOLC Welcome to my life: A life filled with AP US History Tests, Physics labs (ugh), the Scarlet Letter, German essays, 3 hour long choir rehearsals, Clubs, Honor Society, and Trig homework. Aaaaahhhh!! Once in awhile I get a chance to get some LnC time in- for example, yesterday the music video for "Carryin' Your Love With Me" came on TV. It took me a few seconds, but I realized that I'd heard somewhere that Dean was in it. Well, I *rushed* over to the TV and sat in front of it for a few minutes until a caught a fleeting momentary miniscule yet definite glimpse of Dean. I was satisfied. And that was pretty much the highlight of my day. But that's what life's about when youre a 16 year old FOLC!! Getting in little moments of happiness whenever you can, and working on homework in advance (I am the worst procrastinator in the world) so LnC kind of gets pushed to the background sometimes. *sigh* Not being able to fit LnC in at home, I try to satisfy my LnC cravings at school by convincing ppl to join FOLCdom :) But it doesn't always work out the way I plan… Like today in science: I was talking to my physics group about LnC and this guy actually called me a *loser* for writing for this NL!! Can you believe it??! A loser! ME! Well, I put that jerk in his place- I said "No I'm not." Oh yeah, what a comeback. Well what could I have said? "Well, same to you buddy!" or "Superman is cool!" Yeah, he would have laughed me right out the Physics room door. Ah well, that's life I guess. Or, as Lois would say, "Some days you step in it, some days you don't" Except these days I seem to have more on my shoes than usual…
Have You Been to Metropolis Lately? That’s a good question! I know I have, lots of times every day. All of us FOLC’s go every day at least once or twice. We can get to that wonderful city lots of times in lots of ways. Here, let me show you…… {Big cloud of smoke and sparkly music here :) } This is a story about a normal, everyday FOLC… me! One morning (at about 5:30) I woke up to the sound of my alarm clock. I yawned and hit it to make it stop beeping. Making a mental note to myself to get an alarm clock that wasn't so obnoxious, I sat up, and the first thing I saw was Dean Cain staring me straight in the face. (What a wonderful way to start your day!) He and Teri are plastered to my wall, so that whenever I feel the least bit lonely or sad, I can look at my poster and smile. For those few seconds, I was in Metropolis. I made my way out of my room, tripping on the way over my Superman stuffed doll that I'd won at a carnival the past summer. As I returned it to its place, I realized how much it looked like the doll Lois didn't choose in TGGGOH. (There, you see? In Metropolis again!) While eating my cereal, I wondered what Lois' breakfast cereal would look like…..the one mentioned by Tempus. Would it be little Loises? Just her head? Her entire body? Would it have little newspapers in it? Lost in thought, I suddenly realized that there was no more milk, and I almost threw the carton away. Just in time, I remembered that “it’s not just garbage anymore,” and decided to recycle it. (Bam!! Two more round trip tickets to the city we all know and love) After struggling with my hair, books, makeup and almost forgetting to turn on the VCR so that it will tape the next ep. of L&C, I was *finally* on my way out the door. (That’s 5 visits to Metropolis, and I had only just left the house!!) During the day, I noticed every time someone said ‘super’, and smiled. (That makes about 8) I even managed to stick an L&C quote into a conversation. (9) Of course I pointed out that it’s from L&C, and all of my friends rolled their eyes. (Something like this ever happen to you? :) ) Then during one of my more boring classes (coughChemistrycough) I wrote a short note to my friend, doodling the “S” symbol in the empty spaces. (10) Once my long and tiring day was over, I rode home to a loving and affection-seeking cat and a *brand new* FOLC Central Newsletter!! I read it oh-so-happily, laughing at all the familiar quotes, sniffling at all the WAFFy moments, and contributing to any trivia contests, etc. that might be there. (can you tell I'm kissing up here? :) ) Wishing I had enough time to watch an entire episode of my favorite show (L&C of course) I decided instead to watch one of the 30 or so music videos I have on my computer. (That’s #12!) After satisfying my L&C craving for that night, I had a quick dinner, fed the cat, and figured I'd better start on my homework. So I popped in L&C soundtrack and hummed happily along while doing my work. (13) But my night was not over yet! It was chat night, so (after finishing homework, of course………….) I joined fellow FOLC’s in talking about life, Dean, Teri, anything, and everything. (14) I yawned and dragged myself up the stairs and into the shower. After a lengthy, relaxing shower, I had an awful thought!! What if one of my crazy friends put a shrinking potion into my shampoo like the one Lois' insane friend put into Clark’s?!! With that thought, I ran to my room and stood in front of the mirror, just to make sure I was not getting any shorter. After about three minutes of suspense, I was satisfied that I am just as tall as I was when I woke up this morning, and I climb happily into bed. I set my obnoxious alarm, went to sleep, and dreamt about the same thing I woke up with- Lois and Clark: TNAOS……… Just like me, all of us FOLC’s have our Metropolis Moments! That’s what makes us so special!! That’s what makes our friends/siblings/parents/pets roll their eyes at the mention of LnC. It’s because, unlike everybody else, if somebody were to ask us, “Have you been to Metropolis lately?” We could honestly answer..... Yes. P.S. I’d just like to add that I am praying for our country after the tragic events on Tuesday. Living so close to Washington, the attack was very real for my family and school, and I am just lucky that no one I know was hurt in these horrible incidents. I hope that our country can pull together and stand against anyone who would do this. I pray for anyone who was hurt, all the families of those who died, and for the President and Congress. I hope you all will do the same. He’s listening.
Super Scam Has anybody else noticed all of the Superman accessories people have today? There’s everything from backpacks to CD cases to neckties! There must be at least 20 different styles of T-shirts with the S on it, for both girls and boys. They have the sparkly ones in many many different colors; the ones that say ‘Super _____’ – spoiled, sexy, spectacular, (you name it they have it); the plain blue ones with the real S symbol on them, the one where Clark (the comic book one) is showing the world that he’s Superman; the ones with the people that are wearing the S symbol, and my personal fav- the one with the S on it that says underneath “My cape’s at the cleaners.” I’ve even seen Superman boxers! There are Superman coffee mugs, posters with just the S on it, book covers, baseball caps, etc. etc. Superman seems to be very popular, but Lois and Clark is not getting the attention it should! What does everyone say when you tell them you like Lois and Clark? “Oh, that Superman show?” right? Exactly! But where are the shirts with the S that say ‘Lois and Clark’ on them? I think we as fans of LnC are being deprived! I’ll bet not ½ of the people who wear all that Superman stuff are FoLC’s! Not to put down the T-shirt business for going with the Superman idea- I think it’s great! I personally am looking for a couple of Superman accessories. **BUT** What about LnC? We should get mad about this! It’s disenfranchisement- that’s what it is! (I really like that word- it sounds really powerful and legal) Lois and Clark is still a good show, it’s still on, and there are a lot of us out here!! We can yell really loud! (Well, maybe not, since we’d probably wake up the neighbors or our cats, and it wouldn’t get us anywhere, but anyway) We can make a fuss! We can start our own line of clothing! We’ll boycott all the rest of the so-called Superman nonsense! Our line of clothes could be called FOLC- in capital letters like that so it looks important. We could make shirts w/ Dean on the front, maybe even Teri, (I prefer Dean, but…) and some S symbol ones that say LnC on them, maybe some with the Daily Planet logo on them, and then we’d be set! Then, of course we’d move on to coffee mugs, etc etc. First though, a big bunch of FoLC’s need to collect a lot of money, and a factory, and some 1000 people to work in it, and some cloth and stuff to actually make the T-Shirts, and a bunch of advertising, and some stores to sell them in, and … OK, so maybe that’s not really plausible, but who knows? It could happen! Someday, maybe…. For now, maybe we should just write them a letter… FoLC’s, I need your input on another topic. Which songs remind you most of Lois and Clark? Email me with that song title, and I’ll put up the top 5 or 10. Ok, ok, if you can’t decide on just one, pick two. I can’t be putting in votes on 50 different songs, so keep it down to two please. Write me ASAP so that I can start soon. Thanks for your help! I really appreciate it! TTFN- Ta-ta for now! :) Thanks again! ~Sarah
Music of LnC When we hear songs on the radio, what do we think about? I asked everyone to tell me which songs made them think of LnC! Of course there are the obvious ones, I’ve Got a Crush on You, I Only Have Eyes for You, but there must be more. I only got back a few answers the first time, (Thanks Katherine!) but the second time I got more replies. (YES! I actually reached somebody!) One huge FOLC even went through and assigned one song to every episode! How dedicated is that? Wow. She made tapes for each season and told a little about every episode before the song! That’s amazing- it must have taken hours! Anyway, to the other people sent me song titles, which is exactly what I asked for-- Thanks! The votes are in. Here are the top five in the order that I thought they fit (yes, I got the final vote, even if some were more popular than others :) Hey, it’s my column! :) My Best Friend (Tim McGraw) I think this is a great song for any love story, but especially for LnC. In the beginning, he talks about being hurt and lonely (like Clark, sort of- when he couldn’t share his secret w/ anybody) and when he met the girl (Lois) he wasn’t alone anymore. “Oh we just get closer, I fall in love all over, every time I look at you. I don’t know where I’d be without you here with me, life with you makes perfect sense. You’re my best friend.” I think those are about the sweetest lyrics, and it just seems like something Clark would say, doesn’t it? Here’s another great line: “When my world goes crazy, you’re right there to save me, you make me see how much I have.” Isn’t that great? And it reminds me of LnC every time I listen to it. (Thanks to Jana- the one who assigned every episode a song! How dedicated!! ) Love of my Life (Michael W. Smith) If you haven’t heard this song, you are deprived. It’s a beautiful love song, and it fits perfectly with LnC! Another “clarky” song, it has many things you would think Clark would say. “Sometimes it’s so hard to believe when the nights can be so long, and faith gave me the strength and kept me goin on. You are the love of my life, and I’m so glad you found me…I guess this is how it feels when you finally find something real” He describes his girl as his angel in the night, and that kind of fits with Lois, who’s always encouraging Clark to be more than he is, and gets him out of more than one jam. She’s always there, and he’s thanking her. A very sweet song overall! If I were giving out stars, it would get 5 :) (I picked this song all by myself, but thanks to Erin, the maker of the LnC music video- I love it!) I Am Superman (by REM) This song was played in the background of “Tempus, Anyone?” It’s really a great song for LnC, basically because most of the lyrics are “I am Superman, and I can do anything.” That fits Superman/Clark pretty well, and even fits Lois and Clark’s relationship! “If you go a million miles away I’ll track you down girl, trust me when I say I know the pathway to your heart.” Even though Lois isn’t really running away, it fits well enough. Superman finds her when she’s in trouble, etc etc. (Thanks to Emily) Fly Me to the Moon (many artists, but my favorite is Frank Sinatra) I know, I know, you all are saying “but Frank Sinatra didn’t sing it in the episode…” Well I like his version better. I told myself I wouldn’t use any of the songs from the actual show in here, but with this song I couldn’t resist. It’s just so Lois and Clarkish that I had to put it in here. It talks about flying someone to the moon and showing them the galaxy, like Superman did for Lois. “Fly me to the moon, and let me play among the stars, let me see what spring is like on Jupiter and Mars. In other words, hold my hand, in other words, darling, kiss me.” *sigh* Isn’t that sweet? The whole song is filled with nice lovey-dovey things that relate to flying, and that reminds us of Superman, and that reminds us of LnC… (Thanks to Katherine) Kryptonite (3 Doors Down) Who wouldn’t hear this song and *not* think of Lois and Clark? It’s got … interesting lyrics. There are a bunch of references to Superman, and it talks about being alone, like Clark felt. “You stumbled in and bumped your head if not for me then you’d be dead I picked you up and put you back on solid ground.” Superman definitely did that hundreds of times for Lois (I wonder how many exactly- it would be neat to count them all :) ) Not to mention all the times they say “Kryptonite.” This song relates mostly to Superman, but that still reminds us of Lois and Clark, right? :) (Thanks to Menaka) Here are some other Songs that I didn’t have time or space to put in, but I thank these people so much for contributing!! Music of My Heart (N*Sync and Gloria Estefan) Bunches of thanks to Steph! Cross My Heart (George Strait) Many thanks to Jana! Save Tonight (Eagle Eyed Cherry) Thanks so much to Lorraine And I had to mention one more- At the Beginning (Richard Marx and Donna Lewis) I lllloooovvee this song, and it’s all because of Andrea’s music video!! It just fits so well! Thanks indirectly to Andrea!! Any questions, comments, just email me :)! Super deans....err...I mean dreams :)!
The Beginning Hi, everybody! This is my first-ever column- wow! I don't know where to start.... hmmm..... well, I guess the best place to start is the beginning. Introductions are in order here! For those of you who don't know me, my name is Sarah. I'm 15 years old, and I've loved L&C ever since I started watching it a while ago on TNT-- Thank goodness for that channel!! Without it, I might never have discovered the wonderful world of truth, justice, the American way, and choco-chocolate-moster-chip-ice cream!! What a horrible thought- No LnC!! Without LnC so much of my day would be missing! No FOLC Central Newsletter to look forward to, no poster on my wall, no fanfic, no web site-- My goodness, what would our lives be like without it? Well, boring, really. :) We all need that smile we get whenever we read a LnC quote or see someone who was on LnC once. It gives us a reason to...well... stay awake. I don't want to say that it gives us a reason to live, because it doesn't really (foods like spaghetti and chocolate do that ) But LnC definitely makes our lives more interesting! That's basically what I want my column to be about: I want it to remind everybody how much LnC does, or can, affect our lives! That wonderful world of super heroes, hundreds of evil villains, Elvis, and a strange visitor from another planet can take our minds off of our problems. It's a place where bad guys always lose, any problem can be solved within 1 or 2 hours (or sometimes 3 or 4, but we won't mention any names- **cough**maxwelldeter**cough**), and in the end, super heroes are still super, Lois and Clark are usually still happy, and, as Tempus once said, "The only thing that could ruin this would be a commercial." Ain't it the truth :) It's not always a happy place, but it's nice to know it will always be there. So, on an inspirational note, I'll sign off and end my first column. I think we're all FoLCs because of the idea of Superman. Like Lois says, he's "someone to believe in, someone to build a few hopes around. Whatever he can do, it's enough." I hope you all have a great day, and have fun being a FOLC! After all, it's "nothing to get your brain scanned over," just enjoy it! :) Any comments, questions, just email me! :) That's all for now! Talk to you soon!
